North Russell WI
Meeting Times: Third Tuesday of the Month (September - June)
Our main focus is to meet together in friendship and learn something new & have fun. We often have guest speakers. Some of our guest speakers have been a young local Para-Olympian, Red Cross Worker who has worked nationally & internationally, a bee-keeper, a lady alpaca farmer, a 4-H committee leader, a computer demonstrator, a nurse who works in isolated communities in northern Ontario. We welcome new members at any time.
In the summer months when we don’t have regular meetings we usually go on a couple of day trips. Last summer we went to Cumberland’s Village Museum for a tour and a picnic lunch (pizza) and then we also went to Watson’s Mill and Miller’s Oven for lunch in Manotick.
We hosted the Russell District Annual Meeting this year at St. Mary’s Anglican Church Hall in Russell and had a surprise visitor “Adelaide Hoodless” (Susan Dunfield), the founder of WI. She told us all about her life and why she felt it was important for women to get together and share important knowledge for the benefit of their families & their communities. We also had a very lively health break led by our local fitness guru, Ray Scharf. He was very funny and encouraged us all to stay active.
We support many activities which benefit our local community and we also support international projects. Locally we support the Good Neighbours Food Bank by monetary and food donations. We donate money to the Russell Village WI for their Village Street Decorations. We support the Russell Fair with a donation to the Homecrafts & Culinary Arts sections. We hold a yearly yard sale. We work at and donate to the District WI’s booth at the Christmas Market in Cumberland. The money raised supports our District WI and the local food banks. Each meeting we collect money for “Pennies for Friendship” which is a international project for schools and water.
