Vernon WI

Main Focus:

Vernon WI is a strong Branch with members as young as 30yrs old and as young at heart as to have great grandchildren. We are grasping the advances in technology and have both a Facebook page which we hope you will “Like” (Women’s Institute-Vernon Branch) and a Twitter feed @VernonWI. We have over 125 followers on Twitter and many of them are Branches in England.  We meet monthly at the Vernon Recreation Centre and usually have guest speakers present.  We also cater to help raise funds which we in turn donate to the local community.  We sponsor a Foster Child, donate regularly to Winchester District Memorial Hospital, Rural Ottawa South Support Services (ROSSS), Osgoode Care Centre, and the Osgoode Emergency Food Cupboard.

Additional Interest:

Vernon WI also contributes to local High Schools through bursaries, Make-A-Wish of Eastern Ontario, 4-H, Grannies for Grannies (Stephen Lewis Foundation), and other worthwhile charitiable events. Our Annual St Patrick’s Luncheon is always well attended by the community and features a fabulous lunch, door prizes, live music with a singalong, bake table, white elephant sale and, of course, Irish jokes.  Each August we have a daylong bus trip to interesting and exciting places somewhat close by.  We open this trip to other community members that would like to travel with us.  Some trips have been to Parliament Hill, Tatlock Quarry, The Stonebridge, on a Gananoque boat cruise and to a theatre for a play and, last year, a tour of Kingston City Hall with shopping.  Each year we work with other Branches as well as the District to host a Tea Room at the Metcalfe Fair.  It is much appreciated and enjoyed by both Fair patrons and workers.  We are seen as the best place to grab a fresh, homemade snack or dessert.   We host ROSE programs such as working with Women’s Initiatives for Safer Environment self defence workshop and safety audit, and Tell Your Own Story writing workshop. We regularly have members attend both District and Area Annual Meetings so they can share information with members unable to attend.
