How to Make Soul Cakes: A Medieval Halloween Tradition
Oct 29, 2021
Have you ever made soul cakes? Soul cakes are one of the earliest Halloween traditions! They date back to Medieval Britain, when they were traditionally made for Halloween, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day. These cakes were given out to soulers, who were typically children or the poor. Soulers would travel door-to-door, singing songs and saying prayers for the souls of the dead, as well as the souls of the families who gave them cakes. Although a popular tradition at that time in Britain and Ireland, similar traditions have been recorded in many parts of the world.
Soul cakes are simple sweet cakes similar to scones, typically made with raisins or currants and mixed spices. Traditionally, the cakes were decorated with a cross on top, although you can leave them plain if you would like. If you’d like to try making your own soul cakes this Halloween, check out the recipe from Cooking Journey below!
