An afternoon of reminiscing and sharing was part of the 40th Anniversary celebration for North Grey WI (Grey-Bruce Area) on Saturday, November 1, 2014. The 40th Anniversary Committee was comprised of Janice Reid, Carol Davenport, Marion Koepke and Anne Woods. Along with November meeting conveners, Penny Fenwick and Orma Cunningham, they did a wonderful job of decorating the Hall of Trinity United Church in Annan for the occasion, as well as providing delicious refreshments. The Branch’s Tweedsmuir History Books were on display, which brought back many memories.
Twenty-one of the current twenty-three Members attended and there were 40+ guests who came to celebrate the occasion, many whom were former Members. President, Ada Haasnoott welcomed everyone and all stood to recite the Mary Stewart Collect and sing the Institute Ode. Members from other Branches, District and Area brought greetings, including: Parkhead, Howick, Burgoyne, Woodland Springs, Grey District, Centreville and Bruce County District. The program included: the reading of the Minutes of the first meeting of the North Grey Junior WI from 1974; a listing of the donation history; the singing of several Institute songs composed by Members of the North Grey WI, over the years – “Join the Institute” (to the tune of Que Sera, Sera) and “The First Year of North Grey WI” (to the Calendar Girl tune) sung by Marion Koepke, Bonnie Prevost and Marilynn Marshall. A poem was also read about Women’s Institute, written by Mrs. Buchanan (great grandmother of former North Grey WI Member, Linda Bumstead).

Special guest for the day was Marie Silverthorn, former Bothwell Corner’s WI Member and mentor of the original North Grey Junior WI, which became North Grey WI in 1998. She was presented with a corsage and asked to cut the Anniversary Cake. Charter Members in attendance were presented with a red rose. Forty-year membership pins were presented to Linda Tottenham, Carol Davenport, Anne Woods, Elaine Catto and Penny Fenwick.
After the festivities, refreshments were served and a social time was enjoyed by all.
