How to Support Local Farmers this Summer
Jul 9, 2021
Summer is the best time for fresh fruits and vegetables! There’s nothing like the perfect home-grown tomato, a salad made with fresh lettuce from the garden, or a ripe juicy peach on a hot summer day! Many of us love to grow food at home, but if you don’t have the space or you simply want to support local farmers, here are some resources to check out!
If you shop at a grocery store but still want to buy locally grown food, look out for Foodland Ontario stickers on the produce! Foodland Ontario also has a website with a “Finding Local” page, where you can search for farmer’s markets and other places to buy local produce. One example is Farm Fresh Ontario, which has listings for farms that sell many different products including vegetables, fruit, dairy, poultry, and other meats. Check out the “Finding Local” page here: https://www.ontario.ca/foodland/page/finding-local
You can also check out Local Farm Markets, a website dedicated to finding farmer’s markets and farm stands in your area! It has a map that helps you find local produce near you. See this link for their interactive map: http://www.localfarmmarkets.org/CNONfarmmarkets.php
You can also try picking your own fruits and vegetables! It’s a great way to spend an afternoon with friends or family. You can even cook dinner or make dessert together afterward! The PickYourOwn.org website is a wonderful resource for finding pick-your-own farms. They have information on local produce availability and pick-your-own farms in Ontario as well as many other locations in North America. They also have a harvest calendar that shows when to pick certain fruits and vegetables in Ontario: https://www.pickyourown.org/CNONharvestcalendar.htm
Pick Your Own also has an interactive map that helps you find farms with pick-your-own opportunities in your area! Check it out here: https://www.pickyourown.org/CNON.htm
We hope you find these resources useful, and that you get to enjoy some farm-fresh local produce this summer! What are your favourite summer fruits and vegetables?
